Hadith on Persecution: If the enemy intends to persecute us, then we have refused

Al-Bara reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day of the battle with the confederates while he was carrying so much earth for the trench that his abdomen was covered. The Prophet was saying, “O Allah, had you not guided us, we would not have given charity nor prayed. Send tranquility upon us and make our stance firm if we encounter the enemy. Verily, they were the first to transgress against us. If they intend persecution, then we have refused.”
Source: Sahih Bukhari 2638, Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Bukhari
In another narration, the Prophet said, “Verily, the chiefs have refused us. If they intend persecution, then we have refused.”

An-Nawawi said, “The statement that the chiefs have refused us means they have prevented us from answering the call of Islam.”
