Young conservationist gives wings to her dreams

Mahjabeen Unnisa’s essay in Urdu on saving fuel wins her a laptop and a trip to Japan

The tin-roofed Falaknuma house that 14-year-old Mahjabeen Unnisa lives in, is in contrast to her swank new laptop that has thrown open a new world for her. Appreciation from unknown quarters and a tour to Japan are part of her new world and that too because of her proficiency in Urdu, the language that rarely attracts new-age students.
The daughter of plumber Mohammed Khadeer, Mahjabeen recently won the laptop for her essay ‘Eendhan Bachao’ (save fuel) in the national competition organised by Petroleum Conservation Research Association.
It was no mean feat for the Class IX girl as she was competing with thousands of students from across the country to secure the top place.
“I was informed about the topic a day before the competition. I sought help from the school teachers and got a few points after reading books. I had to write seven-page long write-up and substantiate it with a few diagrams,” Mahjabeen, a student of Government Girls High School Falaknuma (Urdu medium) said.
The Urdu competition was part of a larger event conducted in 23 languages. Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan gave away the prizes to the winners. The top place has not only got her a laptop that she never dreamt to own on her own, but also a study tour to Japan. The family has now applied for the passport. “It got delayed because we did not have some documents. As soon as we get it, it will be submitted to DRDO authorities in New Delhi. The tour is next month and we do not want to miss the chance,” Mr. Khadeer said. The ‘achievement’ has brought recognition for the girl in the neighbourhood too.
