Sufyan on Dua: What a servant dislikes is good if it causes him to supplicate

Ibn Abi Dunya reported: Sufyan ibn Uyaina, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “What a servant dislikes is better for him than what he likes. What he dislikes spurs him to supplicate, and what he likes distracts him from it.”

عن ابن أبي الدنيا قَالَ ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ رحمه الله مَا يَكْرَهُ الْعَبْدُ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِمَّا يُحِبُّ لأَنَّ مَا يَكْرَهُهُ يَهِيجُهُ عَلَى الدُّعَاءِ وَمَا يُحِبُّ يُلْهِيهِ عَنْهُ
